Nice looking car but I fear that the seller is wildly optimistic about his reserve price being met. https://www.allcollectorcars.com/classic-car-auctions/vehicles/1959-... You can see where the VIN tag was (the two empty holes) but no tag. He mentioned that the "data tag" was in the still photos. I didn't see it either (??) Why is it a Firesweep? It doesn't look very 59 Dodge-based to me (???) Elite Veteran Posts: 663 Location: Finland | I think 59 Desotos are always with an combined vin- and datatag on the cowl. The two holes on the a-pillar look a little strange but is correct. The 59 Firesweep is 4 " shorter than the other us built ones but the front end looks identical on all so that makes the Firesweep fenders and hood a little rarer than the others. I loaned the picture from an other thread. Expert Posts: 1926 | . 1959 DeSoto Firesweeps were built at the Dodge Hamtramck Plant (the fourth VIN character is “2”); So their data tags looked like ’59 Dodge tags and located on the cowl near right hinge under the hood; 1959 DeSoto Firedomes, Fireflites and Adventurers were built at the Chrysler Jefferson Plant (the fourth VIN character is “1”); Since 1959, DeSoto productions moved from Warren Plant to the Jefferson Plant (Imperial started at the Warren Plant after 1959); Their data tags located on the lower radiator splash panel on the early cars (approx thru the April-May 1959), and on the driver’s door pillar on the later models; Also ’59 Firesweeps were built at Los Angeles Plant (fourth VIN character “4”) and had typical LA-format data plates… Here the original cowl tag picture of this car from my data base; It was taken from another auction where it had been selling earlier; My guessing the optional code “448” on this tag (actually ’59 Dodge order code 458) is mean “Heavy Duty Shocks and Springs”; Although, currently the car has 5-leaf rear springs… if I’ve looked correctly… (cowl tag.JPG) Attachments ---------------- cowl tag.JPG (171KB - 33 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9929 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Thanks for that Ralf. So the holes for a VIN plate on the drivers "A" pillar door jam are really for the Dodges that shared the basic shell (and chassis) with the Firesweep. I can just barely see the Cowl Data Tag in the upper left of this engine bay photo, beside the red (Dodge) hood spring:

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9929 Location: Lower Mainland BC | 60 dart - 2024-01-18 10:58 PM because they are red, they are dodge? No, they are red because they are Dodge. (Why I do NOT know) The above are examples from 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959 Dodges, all with factory red hood hinge springs. Coincidence or.....?

Elite Veteran Posts: 692 Location: Los Angeles, California | Live auction bidding fever, that being said, I think a 58 new yorker 4 door hardtop recently sold for similar pricing as the reserve not met price. Hard pressed to get 50-70k out of any coupe outside of a auction environment I'd imagine.

Expert Posts: 2004 Location: Branson, MO | The '57 was completely detailed to the Nth degree and appeared to be factory correct with the exception of the swivel seats that weren't available in '57 and the trunk mat I believe was not the D E S O T O embossed. And perhaps more importantly, it is a 2 door hardtop and not a 4 door which seems to be much more desirable for most. Still a nice car though.

Location: The Mile High City | From the ad: This 1959 Desoto Firesweep Sportsman 4-door hardtop was made in the last year of Virgil Exner’s “”forward look”” design and the last full year for Desoto as a brand. Only 2,875 of this model were made in the last full year of production. I seem to recall a 1960 De Soto!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9929 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Lancer Mike - 2024-01-26 5:20 PM I seem to recall a 1960 De Soto! Yup. Like this: And a 1961 too (maybe not a full year though): "Only 3,040 cars were produced for the 1961 model year, 911 two-doors and 2,123 four-doors, when the DeSoto division was officially ended once and for all on November 30, 1960." Only a mother.... Edited by 56D500boy 2024-01-26 9:15 PM
