Imperial became a own division in 1955. In 1956 the design did not change much, but they stretched the wheelbase to 133" They also stretched out the rear of the car, this is most obvious on the 2 door Southampton. They kept the same front design from 1955, and the Imperial got some discrete wings but they kept the same lights on top of the rear fenders, a design that was kept for many years. New this year was the name Southampton, earlier they used the name Newport on the 2 door Hardtop. 1956 was also the first year for the 4 door Hardtop called also Southampton. Mid-year 1956 the Imperial got the new three-speed Torqueflite
