That's what I though at first as well, but look carefully at the photo on a large screen (or enlarge the image) and you'll see that the "Day/Night" does appear to be on the mirror.
I think that the highly reflective nature of the mirror makes this difficult to photograph, and so it appears very faint.
On the old mirrors the silver backing may become oxidized and damaged; they will only clean up so far.

From the age of my mirrors, when I look at mine it looks like its misty/foggy behind me. No, it's not my old eyes.
