BTW Jay (and for future archive readers), if you didn’t already do it, you can check your old sending unit while it’s still in the tank.  Use an ohm-meter with one lead on the sending unit post and the other on a good ground.  

If you have a full tank, you should see 9 or 10 ohms.  If you do, and your gauge has been typically reading only half, then your sending unit may not be the issue- you may have a bad ground or wire or issue with the gauge.  

You can also check your ground between the tank and frame with the ohm-meter if you haven’t already.  Should be a small fraction of an ohm / close to zero.
