My office manager went from Holland, MI to Buffalo, NY this past weekend and returned. Her route was through Canada going east, and she went south through the States coming back to Holland. Her word to the wise is that the Canadian route will no longer save you any time like it used to if you’re coming from the upper Midwest because of the thoroughness of the interrogations of the guards at the borders.
Time consumed going through the guards into Canada through Detroit was 1.25 hours, and time consumed re-entering the US at Buffalo was .75 hours. You will give up the 2 hours of travel time you used to gain by crawling in a line. If you choose the Canadian route anyway, note that the interrogation will be intense. They are looking for bad people, weapons, and drugs and they don’t mess around. They will tear your car apart if anything looks suspicious on their powerful
X-ray scanners. They are supposed to help you put your car back together again if they don’t find anything illegal. I wonder how well that would turn out. Better to relax and enjoy the ride through OH and PA.
