The 1964 transmission is cable shifted, that went away in 1966. You could use a 1965 transmission but then you have to get your driveshaft modified as it has a slip-in driveshaft yoke. The '65 transmission uses the same valve body as the console shift in 1964 even though most 1965s are column shift.

If your original transmission is fixable, you should have it rebuilt.

Hello, Can someone advise if a later Big Block 727 Torqueflite will fit in a 64' 300K with the console mounted shifter? I'd like to install a later single pump Torqueflite in the car. Will the stock trans linkage work or does it require modification? Is the later Torqueflite the same length or will I need the crossmember and driveshaft modified? Anything else I would need to know before tackling?

I have no forward or reverse gears and the transmission was whining at all speeds prior. RIP ole' girl....
