Correct, PAG oil is for use with R134A. Old R12 systems used mineral oil, which is not compatible with R12.

I second the notion that the TX valve is OK. These systems typically leak at line junctions and at condenser, which takes a beating over the decades.

Id leave it alone , see if it works . If it does , go on to any real problems with AC .. compressor or leaking core , leaks generally . vacuum / nitrogen , unless planning to change it all anyway to new refrigerant then use cans and sniffer . to be be sure no leaks

Most likely expansion valve is ok

There are many anecdotes all true about changing to a modern refrigerant properly ( rebuilt compressor , get all old oil out , new or cleaned out lines , new receiver dryer , same expansion valve works ok correct oil

Not “ universal oil”— use I think called PAG oil . (?)

Once you separate those oval shaped sheetmetal "clamshell"halves around where the lines enter the case, you will run into a lot of sticky "dum dum" insulation. Carefully peel all that off and you will see the two line fittings better and reveal the temp sensing tube. It clips to the evaporator suction line unclip and gently pull it all out of there. Use backup wrenches on ALL fittings and cap your lines as soon as you do. Of course please remove all refrigerant first safely and properly by recovering it. Good Luck!

How simple or hellacious is it to remove the Expansion Valve from its fiberglass firewall housing?
