Hi Larry,

All my driving life I have been taught that the best way to clear a flooded 
carburetor is to hold the throttle wide open while cranking in short 
bursts.  Don't let the throttle close or when you open it again the 
accelerator pump will put another shot of gas into the carb.  With the 
throttle open, there is little or no vacuum and hence low air flow, this 
prevents gas being siphoned out the Venturi and allows the gas already in 
the cylinders to be expelled.  Or, just leave it alone for an hour or so, 
the gas should evaporate out of some of the cylinders, allowing it to start.

If you had that much gas in the exhaust system, you might have a problem 
with a float valve not sealing, allowing pressure (gas) to bleed off into 
the manifold after the engine is stopped.
