[Chrysler300] RE: One More - Trailer Advice

Now for one more opinion!

I agree with Lee on the tow vehicle. There is nothing like a dually pickup for towing. Jan has a 4WD 3/4 ton Suburban that we tow with occasionally. Forgetting the substantial power difference in my old Dodge dually (built 440 vs. stock 350) the handling difference is night and day. Stay away from station wagons, SUV's (except possibly Ford Excursion) and 1/2 ton pickups. They don't have the weight or wheelbase needed.

On the trailer I agree with Ray! I have an 18' 7000 GVW trailer with full deck. It was expensive for an open car hauler, I paid almost $3K for it a number of years ago. Worth every penny!!! A trailer without a full deck flexes on poor roads, too tall and improperly placed wheels and it will sway.

The real question isn't what will tow the car, it's what will tow it safely!! A full size car and 16" trailer will haul a Hurst around fine - most of the time. What happens if you blow a tire, or you have to stop short, or make a quick manuver? I just towed a '74 T&C Wagon from the farm and really felt the overhang. I had to place it further back than I would like because the front wouldn't clear my winch. Personally, I would look at 18' to 20' full bed car trailers in the 7000 to 10,000 GVW range. The money you save on lesser of a unit won't mean much if your Hurst ends up in a ditch with a trailer on top of it.

One man's opinion, 300ly
