Re: [Chrysler300] Re: Trailer Advisee?

I have done a fair amount of hauling various kinds of old cars too and I
would say that Lee's saftey remarks are right on the money. If you want real
saftey in towing you need at least a 3/4 ton (even four wheel drive is a
must in fields I encountered at a few shows). I have a tilt trailer and it
is a pain in the butt and the stabalizer and load leveling units are a real
pain with the tilt set-up. Tilts are good for really low cars like a Vette.
I prefer the 6.0 diesel Ford crew cab truck over any Dodge any day but they
are all good with a 300 on the trailer......Bill (Indiana)

I do a fairly large amount of car hauling, lots of cross country
ventures etc. longer trailers are heavier, harder to park and maneuver,
generally a waste of money for the infrequent hauling of a collector car
here and there. There is no safety difference between a 16 and 20 footer
at the size and weight level of a 70 300. If you are worried about
safety, look at what you are going to pull the trailer with. Anything
short of a heavy duty FULL size 3/4 ton pickup (preferably a Diesel
Dodge)is just plain a bad idea. A one ton dually is best. Suburbans,
ford exploders or extruders are for getting groceries. Any form of SUV
thing the same. These type vehicles are simply not capable of safely
pulling a loaded car trailer around. Some of you are doing it anyway and
are now pissed at me but whatever, just because your minivan will
physically get that trailer going down the road doesn't mean you should.
Mushy suspensions, inadequate brakes, etc can be disastrous! Tilt beds
are a pain in the ass as well as heavy and expensive, and not needed for
a driving car at all. I have a 16 foot Carson trailer with a wood floor
bed that is rated at 7000 lbs. it weighs in at 1600 lbs empty which is
pretty light for a steel trailer. I have repeatedly loaded it with 8000+
lbs and it does not flex a bit and pulls bitchin, straight as an arrow
down the road. Trailer cost including registration and a spare was $1800
out the door. The steel floor option would add about $300ish to that and
a few pounds. My tow vehicle is of course a 98 Dodge 3500 extra cab
dually with the Cummins Turbo Diesel, a 5 speed manual trans with a US
Gear overdrive splitter and a 3.54 rear axle gear. It makes over 400
horsepower and 800 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels and gets 20
mpg pulling a load if I can keep my foot out of it.
Anything else simply would not do! Just my two cents!

How much do you want damaged? Longer is better, safer. I'd get 20'.
Trailers come in all grades, and since you're gonna spend money, get as
good
as you can get. You have to work with it for a long time, spend a little
more and make it easy on your self.

Visit H&H Trailers in Iowa. Lots of trailers out there but this is one
of
the best I've seen.
http://www.hhtrailer.com/

MX is manual tilt, EX is power tilt

SpeedLoader MX T8.5HD20 MX MAN/HYD 8.5x20'MX SpeedLoader Manual Tandem
Tiltbed hand pump/hydra... $2,265

With some options, near $2500. It's a well built trailer, look around
the
web site.
