Re: [Chrysler300] 1962 Timing Cover Seal

When reinstalling do I HAVE to replace the seal on the timing chain cover?

Well, do not think there is a rule or a law but when the damper is replaced
and the seal isn't, crossing all toes and fingers is advised. Most times,
you will return to replace the seal. Over time, seals get hard and will not
conform to a new mating part. OK, sometimes they will. Basically, how lucky
do you feel?

But, there are other considerations. Like, after you pull the front cover
will this be a good time to change out the timing components? You know,
while you are there anyway. Also the water pump is in your hands and the
fuel pump is so handy so - - - -. Course the oil and filter will get changed
because coolant leaked into the pan and then maybe the pan should come off
to really clean it out and get the timing cover to seal real good. Stat,
coolant and hoses been changed in the last 5 years?

Course if the engine is 'fresh' and only needs a balancer change, why mess
with the seal?

But, then again, how many new problems are likely to arise after the seal is
replaced? Like coolant and oil leaks.
