I had similar problem with my E. turned out to be the cable from tranny to 
speedo. atf would spool up   into cable while runnin' down the road -- then take 
some time to leak out on floor -- amount seemed to depend on # of miles 
driven, and i was getting some on outside of tranny during longer trips. new cable 
solved the problem --- no reoccurences in now 3-4 years.
