Re: [Chrysler300] Speedometer Lube

Hi John,
In my experience, speedometer cable lube is thicker and will not just run down the cable with the use of
"gravity feed". Speedometer lube is more of a grease than an oil. Like the consistency of "Lubriplate" or "Vaseline". This is how I lubed my cable.
I lubed my cable by having the cable out of the Cable housing.
Put some lube in the cable housing end, and some on the immediate part of the cable near the cable housing end.
Start the cable into the housing.
Push and turn the cable, with the cable grabbing some lube from the cable housing end..
As the cable housing end empties, add more lube and continue turning the cable and grabbing more lube.
Repeat until it's all done...should only take a few minutes.
Others may have an easier and better way but this has worked for me.

They sell regular Speedometer cable lube. I even think that "Lubriplate" is listed as "for speedometer cables". I don't really know if one is better than the other. Most automotive parts stores should have speedometer lube.

WARNING !!!! Disconnect the positive battery cable before installing the freshly lubed speedometer cable.
Not too long ago was replacing my speedometer cable and was in the car fishing the cable through the firewall. I smelled something burning, looked through the windshield, saw smoke and ran out to look under the hood. The freshly lubed speedometer cable was wiggling it's way down towards the transmission and in doing so touched the hot side of the starter. This created an arc and burned through the cable housing, welding the cable to the housing. Ruined a very nice housing and cable.

  Hi all,
I know this was talked about recently, but I didn't save it. I'm
replacing a broken speedo cable with a good, freely turning used one
and wanted to lube it before installation. Seems easy as I will hang it
vertically straight to accept lubrication with gravity feed.
Just want to know the best product or substance to use where I can drip
it in one end and let it sit for a few days until it comes out the
  other.
  Thanks,
