actually, this is not so far fetched, if the circuit path parts have not had attention in many years its possible that the electrical connections have gotten dirty, (corrosion, dissimilar metal to metal reactions) increased electrical resistance robs power from the circuit. you could check the contact points for the wires at the various places and undo them, clean em up, and then put em back together and see if that helps any. Other wise, wiser heads have already suggested checking out the old lubricants and see if they have dried out to the point they are causing unnecessary drag on the motors
