Bob may be right regarding the Alternator. Do you have a spare to swap out
and check if the gauge still bounces?

Been there done that! Except my alternator was shorting out and eventually
took the regulator(s) out.

Forwarding this to the list for additional input.  Any other thoughts as to
why the gauge bounces even after a switch to a solid state regulator?
Intermittent alternator output maybe?  Worn Brush?

I have replaced mine with one of John's voltage regulators.  No difference.
I again replaced it later in time because I thought the voltage regulator
was overcharging the battery.  Again no difference.  The needle still
bounces around just like the points voltage regulator.
