RE: [Chrysler300] Re: [FWDLK] Price Insanity

Just a thought - maybe it is good some people want to spend/waste silly
money on things like accessory floor mats - that hopefully means they have
less to push up ebay prices for more essential 300 things/bits more normal
300 members may need ??!!

And re car price insanity, over here in Australia , many of us are being
stunned by latest price just paid/revealed for what is basically a 4 door
Falcon sedan, not much different to the Falcon you had for sale around
'67/68.

The model aussie collectors are crazy about was a higher performance model,
that began as a series in 1967, named GT Falcon. From 69 on, just before our
biggest annual production car race, Ford released a model they designated
"HO", usually having more power and handling/durabilty options.

In 1971, it had a higher output 351 Cleveland motor - standard with tuned
extractors, etc - and an operational hood shaker. About 200 HOs built I
think - top speed about 135mph, quarter mile in 13s, a small fluro orange
'HO' sticker on the glove box lid the only i/d apart from a trunk lid
mounteed spoiler.

Few years ago, worth $25k - 35k, then $75k, then about 6 months ago a
stunning $400,000 paid, and now one just went for just under $700,000 - not
even a mint unrestored one, but a 25k miles restored one
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So if you want to ask how do you figure 300 prices
paid at US auctions, think about paying $700k for a 4 door Falcon - looks
just like most other Falcon 4 doors except wider wheels, stripes down each
side !!! And talk is next ones will be over the $Mill mark !!!

Sadly the world is/has changing - when I first got my licence, in the late
60s gas was 25c a gall, no country speed limits, and I made often twice
weekly 200 mile each way trips to Melbourne on business and visiting couple
of stunning girlfriends I had there. Trip took me 2 hours 15-20mins,
including time stopping for gas about 35 miles before Melb, as at 110 mph
cruise speed, 350 bhp car woulld not make more than 150 miles on 14 gal
tank.

Now over here, they would not only jail you, you also lose your car, never
mind gas price for trip would be around/over $200. So OK you (I think in
most of US) cannot drive your 300 at 100 mph cruise, and it only cost you
$4 to fill the tank, but daily I can still have fun (some) 'ever so briefly
booting' my 300s up to legal limits, just making sure no sneaky cops lurking
to pick you on something else they might try on you.

In 10 years, if not already, people are going to look at the 15-20 year
period up to 1971 approx, as the golden era of ever faster cars built with
no regard for the law and the planet, and a person's right to drive them as
they saw fit/safe?
Chrysler's 300s, starting with the '55 300, were up there with the best re
this, and when the 300's performance mantle waned, other Mopar 426s and 440s
continued to the early 70s when it was killed off. The actual 'ultimate US
perf years/models', I would say was only 1967 -1970 ? - from 71 on
compression ratios and cams were doomed. So the 'pinnacle' was only a way
too brief 3-4 years ?! But lucky for us, over 30 years later, many can still
have fun despite this ??

And re 'too rich future collectors', hopefully 'drivers' will always want
to afford and use 300s as us/those present 300 owners some time in the
future pass on custody of the 300s that have survived. We can't stamp out,
eliminate, those with 'mega bucks', just like we can't take our 300s with us
when we go. And if 'crazies' like our $700k aussie GT HO Falcon buyers, and
your $700 floor mat buyers are distracted on these things, maybe we can
continue enjoying our 300s in the shade somewhat for a while yet ?!

and ps - I know/have some pretty 'too rich' car collector friends - and they
are just as/more passionate about driving their rare/fast/valuable cars as
me/us poorer folks - it's just a bugger some have way more money than us/me
!!

Christopher in Australia where today I just burned another few fastish gals
of gas in a 1957 300C on a two way trip picking up parts for couple of my
'non 300s' on another brilliant sunny autumn day
