A few months into the 1961 model year, just after the turn of the year,
Chrysler ran a special price of $2964. It was for a 4 door sedan with the
manual transmission on the floor (like the 1960-1962 Valiants with manual
transmission), rubber floor mats instead of carpeting and dog dish
hubcaps.
A 2 door HT, like the one that John Hertog had was also available under this
program for about $50 more. My dad and uncle were in partnership in a
Chrysler/Plymouth dealer in northern Wisconsin at the time. They also sold
a 2 door HT in the dubonnet color, like John's, except the one that they
sold had power steering. Last that I knew, it was a rust bucket and is
certainly not with us anymore.
As I understand it, Chrysler Corp thought that they were losing sales to
Pontiac, etc, because the base price of the 1961 Newport was above $3000.
However, the $2964 program was not a big success because most purchasers of
Chryslers did not want a manual transmission. All told, my dad's dealership
only sold about 10 of them, and most of those were the 4 door sedans.
At least the 1960-1962 Chryslers are real beasts to steer without power
steering. My dad sold a 1962 Sport 300 to a local doctor, who ordered it
without P/S. My dad told him not to order it that way, but he wouldn't
listen.
