RE: [Chrysler300] steering tube

If the seal is to stop oil or trans fluid or some other thing coming out, totally ignore the following suggestion.

Otherwise - if the seal one is trying to install is basically the large rubber piece/flap/firewall seal that sits (sort of) loose around a steering column where it goes through into the engine compartment, a not factory suggested way of doing this easily is to use a good razor blade (Stanely knife?) and cut the seal on one side so it can be placed around column without re3moving it, you then glue the cut up after you have put it on column near where needed. And rather than make the cut just straight across/in, cut it a far longer cut by going in at say 45degrees angle, that way it less risk of coming off if the glue fails some day in time unknown - it will likely stay on this way with even no glue.
Christopher in Australia where yesterday a/npoon showery rain, but still no break to our record drought yet for grain growers/farmers, and new national Government just coming under pressure for the near 60c a litre tax they take on our $1.60c a litre petrol price currently, which is destroying new family size cars sales, and may see GM amnd Ford close in Australia just leaving Toyota as sole manufacturer !!!

Dave. The easiest way to remove the steering column in my opinion is to remove the entire unit as an assembly, instead of removing the inner shaft. You can even leave the steering wheel on if you want. Disconnect the wiring from under the column. The column is bolted under the dash, 2 bolts there on each side of the column, then you go to the bottom of the column and loosen up the big C-clamp there, slide it up the column a bit, that will give you access to the spring pin that holds the shaft to the steering box. The spring pin can be driven out any side with a hammer and good punch or a very hard nail the correct size(cut the end off). While you steering column is off, you can also inspect the small thin copper piece that makes your horn electrical connection thru the rubber insulator, located right there at the bottom end of the shaft...and replace if necessary...Good luck!Jean-Yves In New Brunswick.(300K, 300G, 60 Polara)----- Original Message ----- From: david dumais To: chrysler 300 Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2008 8:01 PMSubject: [Chrysler300] steering tubeI need some help on removing the directional signal bearing housing from the 64. I am trying to install the secondary rubber seal that I got from Gary. It goes all the way down to the floor boards. I have the unit stripped and the upper shaft snap ring is out, just can,t pull the bearing housing up and off the shaft. Any one done this before? happy holiday 300K-ly Dave[Non-text portions of this message have been removed][Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
