I don't know the answer to this, but suspect that if you looked at the  
evolution of these parts from the other end of the time line, you might get a  
better idea, and don't forget to throw in the dollar cost, too.
 
For instance, here and now, everyone wants disk brakes because drums are  not 
as efficient, but looking at the issues in 1957 or so, 2 1/2" x 12"  
center-plane brakes were really the best available, except on a few really  expensive 
race car types with disks!
