Re: [Chrysler300] 64 gauge swing

Correct me if I am wrong, I think 1960 was the first year the voltage limiter (regulator) was used on the instrument panel gauges. I find no mention in the 1959 supplement or in the 57 service manual, can't locate my 58 fsm.

I did find this from the 1960 service manual page 50 group 8 "Electrical and Instruments"

+++++++++++++
The constant voltage is provided through the use of a voltage regulator contained inside the fuel gauge case on Models PS-1 and PS-3 (DeSoto), in the oil pressure gauge case on Models PC-1,2, and 3 (Chrysler Windsor, Saratoga, New Yorker), and in the temperature gauge on Model PY-1 (Imperial).

The terminals on the gauge that hoses (houses) the constant voltage regulator internally is marked as follows:
"A" - is the output terminal for the controlled voltage from the regulator.
"I" - is the 12 volt input voltage terminal to the voltage regulator.
"S" - is the terminal for the connection to the sending unit.

The gauges (related to the thermal system) that do not contain the regulator will have only the controlled voltage terminal "T" and the terminal for the connection to the sending unit "S". (**)
+++++++++++++
(**) This is mis-leading -- you'd think that only the gauge with the regulator has a "A" terminal. I checked my spares and all gauges except the ammeter have an "A" terminal, as also shown on the instrument panel wiring diagram.

I found on the web these helpful links:

and

http://www.gcartrim.com/Instrument%20Clusters.htm#clock%20and%20tach (scroll to the bottom of the page).

I made up this page from a gauge I had handy.

  The 64 coupe has the temp and fuel gage "swing moods" blues. I have checked the temp. unit on the block, cleaned it ad reset the connection. The fuel unit in tank is new, it worked in Pa for the meet.

  The ground at the unit to line is the clip o connector, and is new, along with an external ground from tank strap bolt to the fuel line. I have checked for loose wires on the back side of the gages.

  Has any one found a cure for these syndroms? Thanks all.
