[Chrysler300] K and L manual transmission starters

Trying to get an understanding of which starter motor was used on the manual transmission Ks and Ls.

My manual transmission K has a gear reduction starter motor. My manual transmission L has a direct drive starter motor. Jeff Miklas' manual Ls have gear reduction starters.

I was under the impression that although direct drive starters and gear reduction starters physically fit the engine block, they would not interchange due to different flywheel teeth count. Yes? No?

The factory service manuals for 64 and 65 don't help.

Hollander's Interchange says 1962-1964 Chryslers with manual transmission use direct drive which would mean my K has the wrong starter (which works fine).

Hollander's also says the 65 Chrysler with manual uses gear reduction, which means my L has the wrong starter (which works fine).

Anyone able to shed light on my confusion?

Bob
