Subject: [Chrysler300] Disconnecting a Torqueflite cable

On '57-'58 cast iron torqueflites, the cable is removed by unscrewing the
small pipe plug in the aluminum tower where the shift cable enters the
transmission. Inside this tower, is a short metal tube that is connected to
the shift detent itself. There is a slot cut into the reverse side of this
small tube, and a spring is coiled around the tube, with a flat side at one
end. The flat on the end of the spring resides within the slot in the tube,
and retains the cable end where it has a groove cut into it.

To remove the cable, disconnect the adjuster slide bracket at the tower,
pull the cable housing out all the way, and look in the hole where you
removed the pipe plug. The flat end of the spring should be visible, and by
simply pushing it towards the transmission with a small screwdriver, it will
release the cable from its groove and you can pull it out.

Hope this helps, John
