RE: [Chrysler300] Volta, Ampere & Ohm

Dave, Yes the inside of an ammeter contains a very low resistance piece of wire called a shunt. The meter movement is a millivoltmeter connected across that shunt. What usually goes wrong is when someone tightens the nut on the back of the ammeter they do not have the first nut tight enough to avoid the bolt turning. If that threaded bolt turns the least little bit it will break off the solder connection to the shunt internally. These can be resolder but when that shunt is broken loose it usually subjects the millivoltmeter movement to a higher than designed voltage which burns it out and that might be why you notive your ammeter permently slightly off center. You may have to replace the ammeter. Regards, Bob Blohm

Could one of our electrical techs or engineers explain this? I’m guessing
that the ammeter consists of a precision low resistance resistor with a
millivolt meter attached to each end and calibrated in Amperes. It seems
unlikely the resistor would break down over time, but maybe they can be
zapped by high current, moisture and time.

I replaced the ammeter in the 64 300, stuff started working. Some small
bulbs needed replacing.
Still working on the indicator lights. Radio went out!

thanks for the input Guys!
