Don't forget to test vacuum advance. The diaphragms go bad and will supply a
continues source of air to engine.

  Joe, when you say it's hunting and stumbling that might more likely to
  be a fuel mix problem than a timing/advance issue. Do you have a
  problem even setting an idle speed that the engine won't poop out at? A
  spark problem would tend to be more steady than a vacuum problem. And
  if it runs/idles better without the advance hooked up, I'd think your
  timing is too far advanced. So I would keep looking for any possible
  vacuum leak. For example, is there a chance your intake manifold gasket
  is leaking?
