RE: [Chrysler300] Running vintage license tags

Each state tends to have different rules for old cars. Wisconsin allows any car more than 20 years old to have "collector" plates which are $100 but good forever. The car cannot be on the road in the month of January. Antique plates are for any car prior to WW II and are $5 and good for ever but stay with the car if it is sold. Car can only be used for special occaisions. You must comply with registration rules of your home state but traffic laws of the state you are in. Had this experience in Ohio with a new car from Wisconsin which at that time we were allowed to drive with a piece of card board on the back that said "LOF" (license applied for). Got stopped in Ohio for no license. I showed the officer the paper work that showed I had applied for a license on day of purchase and thus was legal. He tried making calls and eventually agreed that what I was doing was legal in Wisconsin but not in Ohio but since I only had to comply with Wisconsin Law He could do nothing about and wished me a safe trip and left me go on my way. Sometimes it feels great to win a debate with the police. Regards, Bob

In Michigan there are two historic vehicle registration options. Both require the vehicle to at least 25 years old.

Option A: register and receive a special plate designated "Historic Vehicle." $25 fee, renewal every 10 years.

Option B: register a same-year Michigan (only) plate. Must be original colors and vehicle type. $35 fee and it is good for life.

Any plate whatsoever can be displayed on the front of the vehicle.

Hi Dave, and all,

Illinois has the same odd arrangement: you can run "historic" tags that aren't actually registered to the vehicle if you have Antique Vehicle plates and registration and have them with you.

I've often wondered how that works over state lines. I noticed Noel Hastalis drove the F from Illinois to the Virginia meet with a 1960 California(!) tag on it. The definition of "historic" is open to interpretation. He seems to have stayed out jail.

So, people! Let's drive some cars to the fall meet! The last few meets have been a little disappointing for turnout of cars. Last Chicago area meet had over 40 cars. Good, central location. Let's do it. Drive your car!

I know we all like each other, but it is a car club after all!

P.S. Meet registration form should hit your mailbox with the Club News any minute.

Just got back from the court house after paying my tag fees for the year.

Several years ago I was lucky enough to score a pair of NOS Iowa plates fort 1960 with the idea of displaying them on the F at shows etc.

Since then I have acquired used '57 and '58 Iowa plates for the C and D and had them restored by a fellow in Iowa Falls, IA. When he sent them back he included a copy of an Iowa notification that the vintage tags could be displayed on the vehicle while driving as long as it was in conjunction with a show, cruise, parade etc.

I thought I would verify this at the local license desk this morning and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I can run the old tags on the cars all the time as long as I HAVE the CURRENT YEAR TAGS and REGISTRATION in THE CAR!!

Good Deal!!

I'm wondering are other states like this??

Do I dare set foot inside ILL on the way to the fall meet displaying old tags??

After all.....it is about..... $AFETY....Right!!!????
