Re: [Chrysler300] Air/Fuel ratio for long rams

  Hi to all Technophiles:

Does anyone know what the proper A/F ratios are for 1960-61 long ram carbs?

Is 14 too lean or too rich?

There are four zones to look at. Idle, off-idle (transition), cruise and power. With an AFR device all can be checked but some need to be checked underload, on the road, or on a dynamometer.

Idle mixture should not be 'best idle' but instead something leaner for economy reasons and throttle response off idle. I like 13.5:1 whenever possible and 14:1 is good also. Set correctly in this range, and with all else OK and you will see a crisp, sharp, off- idle get go. Brings a smile to your face.

The transition mixture is something between idle circuit supplied and the main metering circuits supplied and too fat or lean on basic idle will show up off idle.

Cruise is the main metering circuit but in some cases with way over rich idle mixtures, idle setting can effect cruise. Lean run limit will be at 15:1 but a cruise mixture 14: 1 to 14.5:1 would be nice but down around 13:1 will be found. This can be checked, sort of, at 2500 RPM free run. 12.5:1 or lower will be a gas guzzler and unecessary.

Power mixture should be 12.5:1 or less. At about 10 normally there is black smoke. Carburetors with primary and secondary metering venturis have booster circuits for heavy load running. A real general point where enrichment should be apparent would be underload at high speed cruise and less than 10" manifold vacuum.

Something else that can be checked is the presence of or not of the accelerator pump. Light throttle stab from idle and meter should show a spike.
