Re: [Chrysler300] Fluid: Pink as can be!!

Hi Brandt,
I'm glad it appears to be working OK now. I've been following your trials and tribulations with this car. I hate to say it, but most of you problems seemed to be caused by the mechanic you were using. He sounds like a GM guy just because of his lack of knowledge about type F in Chryslers.

I think the change in shift patterns when hot is a result of the fluid thinning out more than a governor problem. I've found a lot of stuck valves in the valve body in my time, but only one stuck governor, and that was from a trans that sat for years.

If the fluid level is a little high, it will also cause problems with the fluid becoming aerated. I temporarily lost reverse on my G on the way to VA last year because I over filled it a little during a fluid change. It returned to normal after the car sat overnight. My trans has also never been out, so who knows what else is happening in there.

Heat is the number one killer of transmissions out there, the second one would be low fluid probably. Once trans fluid gets hot, it degrades rapidly. The best thing you could have done was change the fluid. It also probably helped to flush out any break in particles or other junk from sitting around. Remember that the "filter" in these things is not designed to remove anything much smaller then marbles!

I won't be making CA. I just went back to working for myself, and can't afford the luxury of trips right now.

300ly,
Don

First off, the "low reverse band" does not apply when you come to a stop in
drive. It only applies in manual low when you push the low button. The one way
clutch is what holds in normal drive position when you come to a stop. When you
have the problem, try pushing the low button and see what happens. Could just be
a sticking governor, or shift valve.

If I did this transmission, that means it has been sitting around for years in
what kind of storage conditions I don't know.

Oh and BTW a 3-1 full throttle kickdown is about the most punishment you can do
to a transmission, especially a ram car. It should take it of coarse, but if you
are going to regularly beat the crap out of it, a trans cooler is a must.

  Don Verity

  Hello to all and Don!

Wow, it shows you what I know about transmissions (a little embarrasing)!! I was
told to contact you and sorry for procrastinating. It appears to be fine now and
no I don't plan on continuing to beat the crap out of it. I just test things to
make sure they're supposed to do what they should do. I will say this, after a
number of times doing 3 to 1 kickdowns (and I am finished doing it), it heats up
and the 3 to 1 happens at say, 43 mph. (like one of the books say) but after you
drive it like a 'normal human being', it cools down and then the 3 to 1s limit
is back to a safe 30 to 32 mph limit! Okay gents; this is also what I found
out....that regardless of the type of fluid, the shift pattern (behavior) will
change because of increased heat, the governor (correct me if I'm wrong Don)
will be more 'sluggish'. I mean, I'm visualizing the counter weights
centrifically spreading out blocking the holes (openings), at a certain
speed, that are responsible for any band applications...but with more heat, the
fluid becomes more ineffective, therefore, maybe at the same speed, the weights
aren't spread out as far, therefore the holes and/or openings are exposed,
allowing band application at a dangerous speed, therefore, earlier self
  destruction and/or far more wear.

Well...It was great getting an email from you Don and yes, I already plan on
installing a tranny cooler.... and now that I know that all trannies will change
their shift patterns after more heat (because of dumb...yes, dumb hotrodding), I
can rest now and take it easy!!! CHEERS ;-D

Sincerely & 300ly, Brandt Jimerson with a better understanding of things!!

PS: Will I see you in Carmel Don!?
