Re: [Chrysler300] billz speed o meter

Bill,
I had a speedometer bouncing scenario on Mopsy. Replaced the cable and followed advice from Jeff Carter ( who also refurbished and calibrated my speedometer) to use transmission fluid as a lubricant. White grease, graphite, etc. will eventually form pearls of hardness and wind their way up into the speedometer head and it will then bind the gears and break. Also, it is critical to get the cable properly positioned from the firewall entrance of the passenger compartment to the rear of the speedometer. My mechanic and I jacked the rear wheels off the floor with a hydraulic jack lifting at the differential banjo. With the front wheels chocked, in Drive, we ran the car up to various speeds where the needle would bounce and then moved the cable to a position where it was smooth. Once we found the “sweet” position we used zip ties to fix it under the dash to maintain the position and used windshield gasket cement (black goop......handle with gloves since it is carcinogenic) to stabilize the cable at the hole in the firewall. Now the needle is steady from 5 mph up to GOOGLE!! Hope this helps! 300’ly, Rob Kern
