This "re-engineering" topic was also addressed by the next company to
own the AFB design when they bought the Carter line. Eventually I think
even the Webber Carburetor folks also had a hand in "re-engineering" the
AFB's.  Eventually the AFB's sold today New are a pretty decent
carburetor. I Have one on the parts chaser 'Hot-Rod' truck I have, in
the years this truck has been in its current configuration it has run
dry once or twice (from sitting too long between drives) but has held
it's settings and performed very nicely on the modified big block thats 
stuffed in it.
