RE: [Chrysler300] Starter for 57 300C

George:

I can't advise on which starter is proper, but the starter solenoid and the
starter relay are two different (but connected) devices. The starter relay
takes low-amperage signals from the ignition switch (power) and the neutral
safety switch (ground) to provide closure of contacts feeding a
higher-current, larger-diameter wire providing power to the solenoid. This
actuates the solenoid which closes contacts from the large diameter cable
from the battery-to the starter. I'd guess the starter has the solenoid
connected to it. As noted, there is a medium-sized wire connecting the
relay and the small terminal on the solenoid. Te battery cable typically
has an ear in the middle of it to be connected to a terminal on the starter
relay and a hole in the end for fitting over the large terminal on the
solenoid.

Subject: [Chrysler300] Starter for 57 300C

I have not been able to locate my FSM and the parts manual is a little had
to follow in regard to the starter for the 57 300's. I have one of the high
torque mini starters on my 300C coupe but now I have several starters laying
here on the floor and can't recall which one is correct for the car. Does it
have an external solenoid on it or not?? The parts manual shows 6 cylinder
engines without one but shows the solenoid on the starter for a V8.

If it uses the starter with the external solenoid attached to the starter,
then what does the starter relay on the inner fender do??

Thanks in advance for the help.

George
