thanks for your statement from the very far Australia.
What you´ve written was exactly the same what I told my wife about the dicussion of the
white wall tires.
I am a new club member and I was not brave enough to write to the forum like you did.

I also bought a set of American Classics for my 300G (225/75 R 15) and paid
about USD 1,600.-.  Not really cheep but new tires for fast new cars are nearly
at the same level.  But I have the right look for my loved car and thats is it.
No problems at all with breaking and roadholding. So the tires are shurely for
Show and I find out also for Go!  In my opinion tires and breaks are the nearly
most important parts of our cars. Especially here in central Europe whith that very hot 

and nervous traffic (perhaps not real in Sweden and Norway but really hot f.e.  in Italy).

PS: I am perhaps going to change the wheels/tires of my 1961 Newport Conv. from 14" to 15".
      If so, I would sell my very new American Classic white walls, size 235/75 R 14, white stripe is 2 1/2"(65 mm) !!
     They are bought this spring and driven by me just about 300 - 400 miles!!   Not more.
     If somebody is interested please make me an offer. Think of the shipping rate of about $ 150.- to the US.

I find it hard to understand how people can talk about $75 tyres and $20
shock absorbers for cars worth up to $100 000.  Is that what you would buy
for a new Mercedes?

Just do a few sums about how much money you will spend on gas over the time
it takes for these items to wear out to put this into perspective....

Note that I had to pay $2000 for my set of 5 American Classics here in
Australia and it will cost $112 just to fill the tank.  If I wanted to spend
$75 on tyres, I'd be driving an old Corolla!
