  Stephen,

  It is very important to have the cover straight and that the metal around the screw holes be slightly concave, away from the sealing surface. Surface straight and clean and then glue the new gasket lightly to the cover with Gasgacinch or 3M trim cement so it does not move around when the cover is positioned on the head. No gasket sealer on the gasket. You will replace your new gaskets some day and sealer is messy and does absolutely nothing to keep the new gaskets from leaking. Prep the cover carefully and snug down evenly but not too tight all of the cover screws. Too tight if the gasket is pushing out.

  Fel Pro did have high performance gaskets available. If they are available, use them. 

  Exhaust gaskets were available for 440s in motorhomes that had heat shield tabs to give the cover gaskets some protection. Your gaskets should never see the heat that the motorhomes did. There is plenty of heat however
