RE: [Chrysler300] Negative battery Cable 1958 300D

Larry:

On my '55 C-300, there are two cap screws holding the base of the generator
bracket to the water pump. The ground cable has always been connected to
the outboard cap screw. I think I've replaced it without draining coolant
from the pump or head.

The heating of your ground cable may not be entirely from conduction from
the exhaust manifold. You may have a short in the solenoid, starter or
elsewhere. And, in spite of the fact we all know of the possibility,
corrosion at the battery terminals is always a likelihood, even if it is not
visible at the external connection. Pull both clamps off, use a special
tool to scour the ID and OD of each connection to shiny lead and clamp down
tight. It is always a good idea to check to make sure the block-to-body
ground link is in place, in good shape and with tight, uncorroded
connections to bare metal. Mine is connected to the firewall just behind
the RHS exhaust manifold. If it ever had insulation over the stranded
copper wire it is long gone. I've seen a lot of these made from bare,
plated copper wire mesh.

Like most metals, copper's resistance increases with temperature-perhaps as
much as 35% higher at 260 F vs. 80 F. One can note the reduced power of a
very hot starter. Copper is the second most conductive metal. Silver is
slightly better.

Check it out and let us know what you find.

Larry, I'd put it on the most forward intake manifold bolt

Could someone please tell me where on the engine should the negative
battery cable be attached for a 300D

When I bought my car it was attached to the exhaust manifold stud closest
to the battery

I just noticed that the cable gets really hot all the way to the battery
from the heat of the exhaust manifold

Sometimes when the engine is hot it will not crank even though the battery
is fully charged could this be due to the hot negative battery cable?

Thank You
