Re: [Chrysler300] Need parts for 1957 Chrysler 300C

Hello 300’ly to all!
Henry’s explanation of the 5 bladed fan makes a lot of sense. My C was assembled 8/20/57 and is VIN 3N57-3216. The blade pitch is is about 45 degres and the spacing is not equal all around. Resonating fan belts was a big issue with the A/C cars. The belts that go to the compressor pulley are 71”. I had a resonating problem with mine. At the Auburn Hills Spring 2005 Meet Ron Fedoryk had his Gun Metal Gray C with factory A/C. I noticed he had a pulley/belt tensioner attached to the water pump bolts. He said it came from a 331 Hemi and he had it installed to stop the belt resonation. He also mentioned the fan blade configuration was different and thought it might have something to do with the belt resonation problem. As soon as I returned from that Meet I located one in Portland, Oregon and installed it. No more strumming, thrumming resonating belts! The AC system caused all sorts of issues throughout the early to mid production year for ‘57 and Burt Bowkamp has an interesting discourse on how a lot of A/C issues were addressed by Chrysler for this new A/C system for 1957. There most likely were A/C changes made to many components involved in cooling for this system as the problems popped up during the first year. Rob Kern

Don

My car was built 2 days before yours - without air conditioning. It has the six blade fan like yours but with a silent drive. It makes sense that your air conditioned car would have a direct drive to increase air flow at idle.

A five blade fan with varying blade spacings reduces the chance of resonating fan belts and may have been a later innovation. The blade pitch or size may be greater to keep the air flow the same.

Mine has a build date of 6/4/57. That would seem to follow the “whatever they had” theory.

Perhaps, changes were made (or upgrades as they became available) during the production year. It may be important when siting these examples, on various cars, to include the production number and /or date of manufacture. Seems to me this would clear up a lot of guesswork.
Comments!?

This confirms when a 300 came down the production line, if the correct part was not at hand, it received what was at hand.
