I'm glad I posted this article, the replies have been really great.
Love old stories, that is the Main course at our Club Meets and most of us can sit around for hours telling them.
So, I thought I would add to the discussion.
Back in the day, one of the guys that we hung with at the Dairy Ranch, had a '57 Ford Convertible with the T-bird supercharged T-bird engine.
I worked on it from time to time and we all raced it. He was well; known in the area and a local MD. State trooper was out to get him.
The Dairy Ranch was located @ US Route 40 and 29 junction. Way down on US29 was the spot we called "from the Poles to the Bridge".
This was about 1/4 mile and we had lookouts for the police. Many a race was run there with little problem but this State Trooper decided he was gonna get this ford. Never could, John knew all the back roads and Moonshiners couldn't have done any better.
The Trooper wrecked 4 cars and never caught him. There was a Junkyard on Rt. 2 sough of Baltimore and the yard had them lined up along the street for all to see. The state either bought them or forced him to move them out of sight after a while.
Speaking of Moonshiners, one guy I worked with in Baltimore Westinghouse Factory ran 'shine on the weekends. He had a '51 Mercury Coupe and had those panels behind the rear wheels made into tanks. Heavy overload springs, to try to keep it level. Finally got caught after dozens of runs of Hundred gallons plus, and ended up with probation and lost the car.
I rode on one of those 'shine cars with the extra brakes, in Luray, VA. The Sheriff took my cousin and myself out and demoed it with all the skidding "U" turns. More to that one also.
One of you mentioned Ford steering boxes breaking off from the frame, this happened to me and I drove it 10 miles in the city by sawing the steering back and forth to keep the wheels in parallel. Scary ride and more to it, I'll save it for the Met in April.
