Hi Mark,
Even if the
linkage moves, pedal will then move, ---not the carb
end. ..carbs still sit on throttle stop screw, at
minimum for idle, held there by return springs ..is
anti stall dashpot on it? Not that it works great, but
it helps.
I was told
once that mounting carbs sideways makes them more
fussy about momentary fuel slosh direction in bowls ,
so flow in idle jets impacted more by fuel height over
screws. Momentary high level = momentary rich mixture.
I think all 300 ram cars tend to stall easily at
factory correct idle RPM (and sometimes then won’t
catch!..must go rich, =wet plugs?) . Not sure of
rationale for any of that, prior are my own thoughts,
but definitely fussy. And of course have to be set up
right on car ..many are not…all screws MUST be open
same amount, if undamaged screws/ seats. Edelbrock new
AFB replacement screws cure a lot of “Carb” problems.
Stock screws can get a ring around them from hours of
carb diddling over 55 years, makes it act kind of
on-off instead of smooth adjustment(unknown to you!) .
If you see or feel raised or depressed wear rings on
taper of screws get rid of them. A carb that was
inoperable on idle became perfect with new screws for
me. Raising idle helps, but then a jarring TF engage.
I am not sure there were ever “loose” converters for
iron TF. ..But 300J fixed that on 727. Check exhaust
heat flow in /under carb (the restrictor game in warm
climates) . Present hi test gas here has alcohol,
evaporates faster, heat aggravates it ..and aggravates
all these issues . M! any rams came off when new over
this kind of thing…..why gone for 62. But back with
manual choke in 63-4… Can work great, but not a
trivial task to get them right.
As in hot day
in 4th of July parade…..it stalls ,won’t
catch… auuugh.
Forgot
to mention that I had an extra 3256S Carter AFB, so I
had it rebuilt by Jim McGowan (Quad Shop). The
stalling problem happened with two different carbs, so
I do not think the stalling problem is related to carb
float adjustment. Both carbs work perfectly under
most conditions.
Hi All,
I suspect that after I had
my 413 and Torqueflite rebuilt, the person that
reinstalled the transmission may not have
torqued the mount bolt sufficiently.
When the 300 was recently on
the lift, the spring between the transmission
mount and the transmission seemed to be extended
a few inches. When the mechanic lifted the end
of the transmission, there seemed to be almost
3+ inches of vertical movement. This seemed
excessive to me.
On a side note, I am still
having a problem with stalling as I slow down
and take a sharp right turn. What I think may
be happening is the engine/transmission may be
moving/tilting in such a way to affect the
throttle linkage position? Tell me I am crazy,
but that’s what I need to investigate.
What is the spec to tighten
the transmission mount bolt? Once I do that
properly, I will know more. I checked the shop
manual, but I could not find it. Thanks for all
ideas.
300ly,
Mark Lindahl
