[Chrysler300] Manual chokes on a hemi



The '55 C-300 I recently sold came to me with two single-choke cables and
the automatic choke system completely removed and plugged off at the exhaust
manifold.   The hardware looked very professional on the carbs with some
spring-loaded tensioners and connections looking like they were designed for
it.  The hardware might even have been from a marine version hemi.  That's
the only '55 I ever saw with manual chokes and they were easy to operate.
Sometimes I would forget to unchoke a warmed up engine but in this warm CA
climate, very little choking was required at any time.  The car is now in
Illinois and might get more opportunity to run slightly choked.  The car
came to me from southern Colorado and had originally been shipped to Roswell
NM.  Hard starting may have triggered the assumed conversion to manual
chokes.  The choke heat comes from a tube imbedded in the passenger-side
exhaust manifold.  Fresh air flows into and through the tube, is heated to
near exhaust temperature and is routed via asbestos-insulated steel tubing
to the choke coil on each carb.  The air is then sucked into the carbs.  The
warmed choke coils then open the choke plate and the air continues to flow.
I understand the imbedded tube was susceptible to corrosion and failure
which would then allow exhaust gas to be brought through the tubing-choke
body system.  Early EGR!

12 Years ago I was commissioned to restore an engine compartment of a
Cinnamon 300G stick 3 speed and it utilized the dual cable single knob
manual choke.

Subject: [Chrysler300] J-K Ram Manual Choke Chokes

  

Many will know this but it is interesting, I think. There is a single choke
knob on the LHS of the J&K dash. Pulling that knob closes both chokes
simultaneously and always works-just like in my first car-a '40 Ford. In
that car, I had to use a clothes pin to keep the choke partially closed in
coldest Iowa weather.

In the ram K convertible, the choke knob takes the place of the top switch
in the dash causing the top switch to be moved down into a new hole in the
lower portion of the dash. 

The rest of the story: In the case of Ram J or K coupes, the choke knob
displaced the rear-window defogger switch and the defogger was shown as not
available with the ram engine package. There was an unused spot on the RHS
of the steering column but for some reason (Loom-length?) Chrysler just made
the defogger not available on ram coupes making for a strange-looking
exception for the simple defogger. Seems like they could have used the same
new hole as used for the convertible top switch.

K fans will appreciate this list of common '64 Chrysler options and their

available from the factory and were dealer-installed, including the outside
rear-view mirror and possibly the emergency flasher. Anyone ever seen a
factory-looking emergency flasher on a '64 Chrysler? Police and taxi
options, the 15" wheel options, trailer-towing package, street-hemi engine,
unusual rear-end ratios, spare tire covers for 300's and a few others are
notably missing from the referenced list but were apparently available to
the knowledgeable buyer and salesman. Those were the days, my friends.

to me so I can see just what the manual pull off is. It will/should be

Did the "J & K" come with a manual choke pull as mentioned above as a step
forward from the choke springs releasing the chokes? So the dual pull off
set up for the 426 Wedge 2x4 should work, and is functionally correct?
Correct? If so, where are these available from?

Is that one of the black plastic covered electric ones that fits on carb
itself, up high? Often thought of that..Edelbrock sells a kit for their AFB,
might fit ram carb..convert to electric choke. but not sure . And non stock
look..I used that kit on a ~78 0r 77 360 that had carb thermostat spring in
manifold (stock) but was changed to air gap manifold, and old way was not
possible. It means thermo coil is no longer in Manifold which is ok but
might hit ram air cleaners and non stock looking. I do not know, ..but some
parts from that and from 426 hemi , choke cover with heat tube inlet, fit ok
on WCFB on 392. (those are always broken off or cracked at heat tube) I do
not remember details of that but did do it on 392

I would clean up and use . Nothing goes wrong except crud in it and rust to
myknowledge . You will never get NOS ones. . I tried .. Mine were missing
totally. 

What goes wrong is pots rust out . Why we made them of stainless . Check
floor of manifold .. It can melt into exhaust = vaccuum leak too . I filled
one once with About 1/4" of epoxy 25 years ago .. From exhaust side . Seemed
ok . There some talk , with George I think about putting washers in there (
elbow ends) to lower heat , it is on high side . We are not expecting fast
warm up on 10 degree days any more from a 300f . In fact blocking them might
make sense in California say . Yes , Max wedge choke cables . Like 300 J and
K had . I had J anf had many F . Hardly ever touched J choke , but fought
idle lope rich carbs , uneven pull off , stall etc on F 's . J set up is
better , day to day . But caveat .. I never personally did that as dual
choke pull was even more ra re than carb thermo coils .

So far so Good, several options to consider. the dual cable may be the
easiest if mechanical is in the cards. When you say 426 SS, you are refering
to the 426 Max-wedge 2X4 short short Ram's, correct? I'd prefer the
automatic operation, stock or viable substitute. I also have the old
unit(s), very dirty (maybe corroded) but may be sevicable. Anyway, does a
"real" one still exist? Somewhere? If not a real one, which of the wrong
ones fits the closest to original? I do not want to modify the manifold, I
have the new "Pots" and gaskets but still need the gismo's/spring thing that
opens the choke plate. All your help so far is GREATLY appreciated.

from choke coil . Slant six ones too , 60's , they do not" Fit" but can be
cobbled up . Frankly F/G ram chokes never work right .. One comes off before
the other . Why it went away in 62 . Warm up cycle in cold weather d icey .
But back in j,k but with manual pulloff . I understand the 426 SS cars dual
choke cable being repro'd fits . Worth thinking about ..
