Re: [Chrysler300] Convertible top oil

Why not call Hydo-E-Lectric in Punta Gorda FL. They make and sell the power rams for the tops.

Yes, ATF is recommended.  But the ATF from long ago is also long gone, and what exists today may or may not have unintended consequences (there are many varieties).  Power steering fluid and ATF have been used interchangeably for many years in power steering systems without any glaring issue with either one.  I personally prefer not to have the red fluid mess to deal with when a leak occurs, as it stains very well.

I'm fairly certain the recommended fluid is ATF for '66 (and newer).  There was a change sometime around '62 or '63 away from brake fluid to ATF.  My '61 300G still uses brake fluid, so I've stuck with it, but when the system gets rebuilt, it'll get ATF.  I owned a '66 Satellite convert back in '70 and it had ATF in it.  Check your service manual for a recommendation.

Subject: [Chrysler300] Convertible top oil

Hi all:

Can anyone apprise me of the best oil to use in the hydraulic lift of the convertible top of my 1966 300?  Should I purge the old oil?  If so, what liquid should I use for purging?
