Re: [Chrysler300] Rear axle vent on a C

Probably a normal failure if old ?is there lash or excessive noise ?  I do not know about C vent but many cars have them . Otherwise pressure builds and forced out oil, just as you surmise . I have seen a high up cover bolt drilled about .060 hole with a sheet metal cap over hole like a little coke bottle cap. Some Jeeps have a hose to up high ( water) not an issue here , but might be easy to get . If you had to add one .. Interesting question . But it worked ok as is for xxxx miles ? Someone like Moser must sell them ?

A little help please?

I destroyed the rear axle pinion seal somehow on my C. Never leaked a drop before, and suddenly seemed to let go. I had replaced the gear oil a few thousand miles back, so that should have been rather fresh. But it actually smelled a little skunky now already, and that makes us wonder whether it may have overheated and destroyed the seal on a recent 3-hour 95-degree trip.

The mechanic noted that I do not appear to have a housing vent, and suggests the pressure buildup may have been a big contributing factor. I do think I may have a solid plug on the top of the axle tube somewhere.Should there be a vent on the '57 housing? If so, where? And is that a common NAPA part?

Thanks guys.
