I understand control cables in California can help . I know they have built special or longer push button cables for pb trans . I have bought standard cables for other uses,( e brake)  good guys.... maybe club might get them involved with repro? 
That said the original cable pretty good . Hang vertically and drip 10 w oil in. Has always worked for me .,takes a few days . Work back and forth a few times a day. Always Murray park too , used one .
