I think either ATF or brake fluid will work, but if there is a leak, and it gets larger, the ATF will stain red, but the brake fluid will eat paint.  What about clear power steering fluid?  Should not eat paint or leave red stains if it gets out?

It is probably down on fluid , had same issue fixed by just adding fluid , slow leaks at cylinder seals , but happens slowly.. why change everything  . Just top off  . Despite advice about spraying mounts with WD 40, that eats the rubber . Caveat emptor .

What IS the correct fluid comes up ? Brake fluid or PS/ ATF . Still have a confused recollection . Too many cars in past .
PS/  ATF is essentially 10 weight oil .

I'm not sure how much you plan on doing yourself, but the parts should be fairly easy to find.  Even when I was living in Huntsville Al (I'm now in Rochester NY), I found a shop that replaced the lift cylinders and hoses (motor was OK) for my 62 300..  The parts were $395 and 3 hours labor.
