RE: [Chrysler300] Hi 300ites,

Hi Steve,

Agree with Bob, probably spline not aligned right where steering wheel shaft connects to box, given box has probably been out at some point .

While obviously not correct, you would think you could make up for that (1 spline off) with lengthening one tie rod and shortening other to get wheels straight ahead, even if pitman arm travel not quite centered, but then geometry of the link that connects to wheel spindle is not  exactly same on both sides. That might induce slight bump steer issues or asymmetric end stops with full wheel cut to R and L …But easy to do and undo, if so inclined.  Someone might have done that to your car in past. Now when all is right underneath, wheel is off.

Had this problem once I think it was on a Dodge pickup with a rebuilt box, I think we had to pull it out again.  I do not know why they have that master spline, other than turn signal switch symmetry . Some cars have that release of signal  actuation a part of the steering wheel (300C and D , a tab sticks down---not on the box connector shaft ) If wheel and box are aligned OK, it steers Ok with wheel level no matter where switch actuation happens on F , but of course switch is then asymmetric . Not good either. (in case thinking about cutting splines--I did think about that on ?F, came to me with tipped steering wheel. —on 70’s dodge,  also related somehow to locking column thing too—decided not to cut splines.  ) But if you are not super careful at assembly time and you KNOW  about all this, ---; THEN you will be in fact  100% sure wheels are dead ahead and steering wheel level, as you put it together, or you end up in a poor place.   It gets put together wrong rather easily , as often the steering wheel is not on the steering shaft at the time , and it ends up off a spline tooth at box end  …All conjecture, but most likely .

On battery see if volts are 13 or more engine running at about 1000RPM , or watch hi beam headlights, or dome lights , they will brighten noticeably from idle to higher RPM.--- If so it is charging. Pointer pretty simple and reliable if not messed with? If not charging , (most likely-- if not moving) try tapping back of generator with large plastic hammer or 2x4..the brushes stick in slides . It is most likely NOT VR. Do not let mechanic mess with inside of VR! Also, with engine off, turn on headlights , if pointer OK it will show a discharge.

Hope this helps,

John

Steve,

There are a few things that could result in the problem, and I ran into this a few years back when I had my 300G aligned after getting the steering box rebuilt.  Some questions:

Was the wheel true (aligned)  prior to the alignment?

Why exactly did you have it aligned?  New front end parts?

Are you running radial tires and recently got new or rotated them?  Radials develop run in issues that can cause this, you may want to rotate, front back swap sides etc.

Did you have the steering box out?  If so, the spline that connects the steering shaft to the box may be off a tooth or two.  Requires pulling the steering column to fix, not easy. Please note, you cannot remove and relocate the steering wheel to fix this, it has a master spline and only goes on one way, also your turn signals won’t cancel properly is you force a wheel move on the spline.

Did the mechanic take up all the adjustment he could in the tie rod ends?

Question #1. My F is in the shop for front end alignment. Guys done old cars for years.

He set everything correctly but stearing wheel is off 10 degrees. If he tries to set stearing wheel correctly, can't align front end. Told him someone in the club would know the answer.

Question # 2 dash amp meter has been working fine since Jamie Hyde helped me solve charging issue a few years .needle moves a little to ÷ when driving

Noticed yesterday when I dropped the car off, needle was not moving. Mechanic is going to run some tests to see if battery is charging, etc. Any thoughts why it might have stopped working.

Thanks in advance.
