Do you have access to an old big shop manual for any 383? Seem to remember a way to check that fitment and adjust it. I haven't built a 383 for a long time, but know that pickup/ screen assembly has to be just touching the oil pan. Can anyone else check that spec?

Need some advice on this 383 Engine Build.

I seem to be having trouble with the fit on the Oil Pump Pickup Screen OR the Oil Pan  OR Both.

The facts are these....

  • Block is a 383 from 1969; though going to be planted into a 1962 300 Sport
  • Oil Pan = Newly ordered from Rock Auto; part number Pioneer 501173 (Same for 1962 & 1969)
  • Oil Pump Pickup Screen - Newly ordered from Rock Auto: part number Sealed Power 22415055 (Listed for 1969; though no listing for 1962)

·

    • That Oil Pump Pickup Screen seemed to be too long once installed, as the Oil Pan would not rest on the block.  I returned it and then ordered...
  • Oil Pump Pickup Screen - Autozone: part number Melling 63-S2

·

    • That one ALSO seems to be too long to let the Oil Pan rest on the block

So my questions are:

  1. Does anyone know if there is another Oil Pump Pickup Screen part number I should be ordering from somewhere?
  2.
    1. It would need to be shorter in overall length OR
    2. Maybe it is a screen with a bend in it?  The two I have already tried are straight pipes with the round screen on the ends
  1. Does anyone know if the Oil Pan I ordered might be incorrect?  It looks, smells, feels like the correct pan for the motor.  All bolt holes line up..  The Oil Dipstick notch is in the right place.  It does have a "shelf" inside of the pan; though the Pickup Screen goes beyond that and hits the bottom of the Pan
  2. Does anyone know if I use this pan, with its "shelf" inside....if that negates the need for a windage tray?
  3.
    1. Never used a windage tray, though ordered one for this build

Thank you very much for your time.
