Re: [Chrysler300] 383 Build for a '62 Sport

This might have to do with front rear or center sump oil pans . All three were made on B block and the pickup shape has to change . Probably depth too . I did not know that long ago — when I put a 440 into a 57 dodge .. Sump on my B block was right where steering link tie rod went on a 57 . Being young , I took the gas wrench and put a steel tube right through the Pan for the link .   Then I worried I reduced oil amount so I welded a piece from another pan in the empty space ( great to be thirty and full of ideas )   . But I was able to use the B block pickup !!!  Trucks I think have the other pan . Might look at truck pickup or call Melling or Milodon ( latter especially .. they make hundreds of pans and pickups)  . You have old one ? Nothing goes wrong with those ? Sounds like you have right pan wrong  pickup or possibly other way around . Be sure your pan is right for your car by trying it in frame ...   I found it would   not fit while hanging on the install chain hoist .. Arrgh
You can modify it too and rethread it , std pipe thread . I believe they are supposed to be about 1/4 off bottom of pan . Check with clay or careful measuring .
Good luck ! John

Matt, two thoughts. Who made the aftermarket pan? Holes may line up but it may not be deep enough.....poor quality control is something I more or less expect these days. You have other Mopars as I recall, can you measure depth on 413 etc and compare? Do you not have the original pan you removed?

As for windage trays, I don’t believe they’re necessary on a street car and they’re a pain if you ever try to service the pan gasket while in the car. My two cents.

Need some advice on this 383 Engine Build.
I seem to be having trouble with the fit on the Oil Pump Pickup Screen OR the Oil Pan  OR Both.

The facts are these....
  • Block is a 383 from 1969; though going to be planted into a 1962 300 Sport
  • Oil Pan = Newly ordered from Rock Auto; part number Pioneer 501173 (Same for 1962 & 1969)
  • Oil Pump Pickup Screen - Newly ordered from Rock Auto: part number Sealed Power 22415055 (Listed for 1969; though no listing for 1962)
    • That Oil Pump Pickup Screen seemed to be too long once installed, as the Oil Pan would not rest on the block.  I returned it and then ordered....
  • Oil Pump Pickup Screen - Autozone: part number Melling 63-S2
    • That one ALSO seems to be too long to let the Oil Pan rest on the block
So my questions are:
  1. Does anyone know if there is another Oil Pump Pickup Screen part number I should be ordering from somewhere?
    1. It would need to be shorter in overall length OR
    2. Maybe it is a screen with a bend in it?  The two I have already tried are straight pipes with the round screen on the ends
  2. Does anyone know if the Oil Pan I ordered might be incorrect?  It looks, smells, feels like the correct pan for the motor.  All bolt holes line up.  The Oil Dipstick notch is in the right place.  It does have a "shelf" inside of the pan; though the Pickup Screen goes beyond that and hits the bottom of the Pan
  3. Does anyone know if I use this pan, with its "shelf" inside....if that negates the need for a windage tray?
    1. Never used a windage tray, though ordered one for this build
Thank you very much for your time.
