RE: [Chrysler300] 1962 - Fuel Gauge Dilemma

Pull sending unit. Measure reading at the bottom of the range (ohms). Now, measure reading at the top of the range. Compare these readings to the range in the factory shop manual. Are they the same ?

Check schematic. Is there a 12V to 5V Constant Voltage regulator attached to the fuel gauge ? These things go bad, resulting in the gauge reading at either one end or the other. This is most likely the cause of your problem.

Subject: [Chrysler300] 1962 - Fuel Gauge Dilemma

Seeking any thoughts on why my fuel gauge won't work.

The Facts:
- 1962 300 Sport
- Astradome fully restored probably 25 years ago
- Car has sat for last 8-10 years
- Pulled tank to clean it out & discovered the sending unit pipe IN was separated from its sending unit housing, so...
- New Vans Auto Sending Unit installed a month or so go
- There is approximately 6 gallons in the tank

The Diagnostics:
- Test Light illuminates at Sending Unit; so there is power to the wire
- Test Light illuminates at power wire feed to gauge as well
- Sending Unit has Ohm reading at Sending Unit
- Fuel Gauge has Ohm reading as well
- Running an external jumper wire from the body of the Sending Unit to ground; had no effect on the gauge
- Grounding the Power Wire to the Sending Unit did NOT make the fuel gauge jump to FULL

Any other thoughts?
I cannot get a reading at the gauge that worked perfectly 8-10 years ago

Thanks!
Matt Allyn
