Hello Mike

  I  attach shematic for 61 model.  You say nothing works without the added extra wire. Ok try follow the shematic & use a volt meter. 

 If you have a volt meter in the Dash i would check there first.....if broken almost all electrics are stone dead....  voltmeter is early in the system so is a place to look.  Or with your extra wire in place all up and running do your anmeter in dash work?

I try look at the shematic for your car!

I am working on this new to me G.

The previous owner ran a wire with fuse from the battery to the top lug on the fuse block.  I removed it and nothing in the car works.  when i reconnect that battery line everything works.  I know this should not be connected directly to the battery. 

How should the fuse panel be powered?  The FSM is a little fuzzy on this.
