Re: {Chrysler 300} Ac

John-

I proclaim no expertise. I can relate only my experience with 6 antique automobile air conditioners from GM, Ford & Chrysler. Relevant here is my 1968 New Yorker which is unmodified but for the use of R134. It has been charged as such since 2007 and performs admirably. Discharge temps after stabilization are at 40 degrees. It cools as Mother Mopar had hoped.

I believe the 68 system in terms of its mechanical refrigeration circuit is substantially similar to the early 60's system, with their tx valve and EPR with RV2. So I would have no hesitation whatsoever using R134. You will need a new dryer, some flush agent, and Polyol Ester Oil which is best for our old cars, compatible with 12 and 134.

I run a 62 Bonneville STV/A6 system on R134 too. That thing overcools if anything, always fiddling to prevent blue lips. My 63 XL & 63 Impala are on R12 the way they came to me and never having leaked out or needed repair they remain that way. And my 60 Buick Electra with its semi-hermetic A5 and hot gas bypass valve refrigerant control is dead. In 15 years its the only AC system I've given up on. It has to come out completely. I'm too old and have alternatives.

The Chrysler AC system is simple and works very well. EPR valves get stuck, that is the weak link in all auto refrigeration systems. GM changed its method 3 times in less than 10 years. Some remove the EPR and let the system run wide open. It will freeze up the evap and that can lead to "slugging" which is when liquid refrigerant is returned to the compressor which was expecting a low pressure gas.

Sorry for all the opinion. Have no hesitation about using 134. Make sure you have ester oil in the system.

And happy thanksgiving

It is also “Point Of Access “ valve or line  attachment  descriptor in many AC systems and varies the threads etc depending on refrigerant fittings specific to a refrigerant
Does anyone really know ( not opinion ) if R 134 works ok with our expansion valve ? At least in theory it closes progressively at something above 32 F to prevent ice on coils , and although pressures near that desired temp are wildly different on the two refrigerants maybe it just works anyway . Engineer in me says valve is specific in some way to  refrigerant as it also the expansion orifice . But it changes that orifice as it does it’s job . (vs cycling clutch .)
anecdotal stuff matters too , if you have 134 working ok with 134 in it?
With this normal operating pressure issue in mind I went looking and found R 414 which is close to R 12 numbers , but pricey . JY used this ok , no need to change oils etc .
But maybe just using the more common one R134 is ok with oil change too  in a full restoration as it is essentially a big feedback loop ,it  just adjusts to right temp . But pressures are much higher ...
I realize this is a little heavy dive , but someone in club may really know AC issues and expansion valve design ?    Maybe a supplier has 134  ex valve ? but fittings no doubt all wrong ..,
If it works , shut up and use it. I get that too .. john

POA stands for pilot orifice absolute and is used on GM cars and cars using GM systems (RR Lincoln). It replaced the STV suction throttling valve.  It has nothing to do with Mother Mopar and her RV2. The RV2 does use a EPR, not in Imperials from what I understand and EPR stands for Evaporator Pressure Valve.

Not being critical—just learning & sharing, For Evaporator Pressure Regulator valve—from the ’64 FSM see: air-conditioning.pdf (jholst.net) Pages 24:15-17

POA?  I had to look it up and found this:  About POA valves | Original Air Group   A learning opportunity for me and, perhaps, others.

Need to know the color of the evaporator pressure regulator  located on the back side of AC  unit on my 300F. Thanks to all, Kim.
