Re: {Chrysler 300} Push button guides TF

Agree Don — I meant to say close them , however twice they have snapped off , that happened  ,  personal experience , only one side  is left so whole button thing is immediately junk , —-generally, a snap off failure  when you deform it indicates  spring temper steel — I might add that in back they are true  springs as they snap in and out on their  index , look at what goes on . Can’t do that spring action back there as you know with soft steel , soft takes a set , and also would  lose the sharp corners needed to work the index with wear .  Hard resists that .
Whatever , with the cement you won’t break them off . Bend them if you want to .

I made something of 1/8” phenolic strip glued to back of faceplate lifts bottom of buttons ~ 1/8” . No more falling behind plate for now . Can’t see it either from front .
Not sure what goes on with all this  pre 60 button hole / button size stuff  — but this
Issue is out there ! On 60 up too , in a different way . I think we all have seen buttons flopping around or falling behind .

I had said to close the forks up a little, not spread them. That will only make them looser. I have closed up many, and have yet to snap them off. I don't think they are hardened.

Agree with all you say , on the forks ; however they are hardened steel and attempting to spread them , one half can snap off. Then you are really utterly screwed have to get into whole new box , messing with cable adjustment  etc . I have had that happen . So forewarned . What does solve that looseness on forks is judiciously applied weatherstrip adhesive . You can still pull it off but now you won’t be in there again , ever !
I have had many 300 , agree the 60 rides on bezel , sometimes a felt pad to keep light from the bulb from glaring out . That is often tossed .
On 58 the holes in the plate are grossly oversized , maybe 1/8” larger than button all around it . I am almost positive from memory another piece centers it . 60 was probably a cost reduction as part of new dash . If you think about it chrome sleeved buttons will scratch on bezel , but probably first gen they thought about it and made a sliding non scratch bearing surface , but still needed nice chrome front. My thoughts anyway ..
thank you , Dan,
John

So when I trailered my 300 F to Audrain Concours last fall buttons came lose on the trailer ride with the cars nose in the air, especially over the Newport bridges.  Upon arrival, with only minutes to get on the show field we winched the car down only to find the reverse button had slipped off and fallen behind the trim. Thank Almighty  I still had drive.  We purred over the grounds as though nothing happened but when I parked I realized I had no neutral button and would not be able to restart. A quick call to Don Verity informed me I needed an Allan wrench and a Phillips head to fix it, which I did but not before the judges arrived and asked me to start it...

I've not done that yet, but thinking John that this is your problem as well. Pull the plate and examine how the buttons slide on the forks.

As you watch keep in mind that I have no working transmission buttons, I have no idea if I can fix it, I am perspiring copiously and my wife has her hand on my leg saying ..."remember why we are here...stay calm."
