RE: {Chrysler 300} FW: Chrysler 300 1964

J. Grady probably knows for sure, but I think the 62 405hp short ram engine probably used a similar or same cam as the optional 60-61 400hp factory engines and it was considerably more radical than the standard version.  Intended for racing – street drivability would be poor - poor low end performance, not at lot of vacuum, etc.

So J/ramK was NOT a de-rated 62 405hp short ram.  60-62 short rams water heated, exhaust headers similar in dimension but NOT the same as 63-64, no provision for exhaust heat as Don mentioned in an earlier email plus other dimensional differences.

63-64  390hp ram engine designed for street use and good drivability – which it delivers when properly tuned – with a STOCK solid cam (or close equivalent hydraulic cam conversion).  And a pretty good wallup under full throttle as well - if you can keep from shredding the tires in the process – which the late George Riehl used to demonstrate most aptly.

Hi, Val:

Agreed—That’s why I put the “?” in there.  I think the dimensions and interference issues would be the same.

Further wondering why the 405 HP ’62 short ram engines were derated to 390 HP in the J’s & K’s.  Different cam or other hardware?  Credibility issue?  Insurance issue?  Interference with marketing of hemi and max wedge-engined Plymouths and Dodges?  I’ve even seen literature that indicated one could order a hemi engine in a Chrysler—but no indication any were ever produced.  Pity.

Ahh, sweet mysteries of life in the fast lane.

To my knowledge long rams were not available on 62’s. I also think the short rams were supposedly dealer installed ?

I recall the meet, the car, the young woman owner and her father who had helped prepare the car—all from TX.  I think the car was concours judged.

Amazingly, their original FirePower 360 engine had been equipped with short rams.  The outlet piping of the original boosted master cylinder had been re-routed downward and the horizontal outlet plugged.  This left about 3/8” clearance between the LH ram assembly and the MC plug.  I have a picture of same “somewhere”.

So, this brings up a question I have on a ’62 300 with a long(?) ram optional engine—if ever one existed.  Did they use the remote MC then as was later used on J’s & K’s? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi

One of my friends has bought the car on the photos below. Somebody has told him that it is a 300 Silver Special. The paint code is 229. Can anyone confirm if it is a Silver Special or tell me what else it can be?

Your assistance is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Allan
