Re: {Chrysler 300} Passing of Burt Bouwkamp

I really liked this guy . He did so much more than the obituary even remotely touched on .
I remember from the visit with him , ( thank you Keith) discussing the project —-which he personally  headed up— to “ make a smaller  331 style hemi  “ for dodge . The resulting 241,270 , 315 /325 hemi and poly weighed about 200 lbs less , competed twice at Indy , and as a 270 won C/ Altered at the NHRA 5 years in a row ( 57-62 ) against 1000 small Block  chev , including Jenkins and Yunick max built 283 style engines ( boy do chevy guys hate that) . I saw that car , “going goat” a  Ford Hot rod , it had a homemade ram Manifold since 57 , it just walked away from chevs at top end , turning high 12’s . From 270” , 4 2 bbl carbs . Chrysler got idea for rams from him . For sure.
Chev  woukd be in front off the line , he would catch and pass them .
Even chrysler fans may not realize the bore centers on that motor were smaller than later 318 , meaning  a smaller shorter engine — smaller than LA  — it had a high cam placement compared to GM etc .why it went out to 325” no
Problem . And hemi from the first day
Chrysler later went with 301/318 wide poly plymouth , why I never understood — larger heavier etc . That 318 poly motor was never competitive .
Imagine if we had 241,270 325 little hemi all through the years, later with turbo or super chargers? And 4 cyl version ?
Perfect engine for today .
As an engineer , I think it was a spectacular design , and just one of many things he did , hands on, not just managing .
He was a very rare person , one in a million ..
I had hoped to see him again …

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Passing of Burt Bouwkamp

All:

The Chrysler 300 community has lost on of the pioneers of our cars, Burt Bouwkamp.  Burt passed away yesterday.  Several of us participated at the home of member Keith Boonstra on two occasions to meet Burt and pick his brain on the whys of the Chrysler 300 program. Burt was heavily involved in the development of the 1957 Chrysler 300 program, and, even in his 90's, was sharp and was able to recall events and details of the program for us curious 300-ites.  It's a sad day when the people involved are leaving us, but fortunately some of us were able to meet with him and record the sessions, which are available on our website.

I have attached his obituary and photos of some of his work at Chrysler.
